WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. (WSAU) -- Several people in Wood County have been getting unusual phone calls over the last few days. Lieutenant Brian Krzykowski with the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department says several residents have received automated calls from out of state numbers. “The numbers are from multiple numbers that show up on the caller ID, so it’s not any one particular number that’s showing up. At least that’s what’s been reported by the few people that did call us, and we’re not certain exactly how many people this has affected, but enough that a number of people called our dispatch center.”
Police and the telephone companies are not sure where the calls are coming from. Krzykowski says if you get these calls, don’t follow their instructions, and do not call their numbers back as it could be a scam. “If someone’s asking them to do unusual things on their phone, or asking them for information like in this case or any other case, especially with scams, not to provide the information or follow the directions of the person that’s calling them. The big thing is that our citizens should know who they’re speaking to on the other side of the phone, and if they don’t know who that person is, then their option is just to hang up on them.”
Police advise contacting your local phone company if you get any calls like this.
