WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- Over fifty people have applied for the open Wausau Fire Chief vacancy.
A nationwide search is underway for the person that will take over the department after Gary Buchberger’s January retirement. The Police and Fire Commission had a closed session meeting Wednesday to narrow down the field of qualified applicants.
The city is looking for someone with at least ten years in fire service and at least five years in management and preferably with a Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree.
The first round of interviews begins next week before the Police and Fire Commission.
City officials would like to make their selection within a month. Until then, Police Chief Jeff Hardel is the Fire Department’s acting chief.
