WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- The deadline to register your dogs and cats is coming up at the end of the month.
Wausau city clerk Tony Rayala says dog registration is a requirement for everyone in the state. "By state statutes you must license you dog by March 31, or you would get late fees. And in the city of Wausau the late fees can be quite substantial. It's actually triple the cost of registering your pet." New laws were enacted last year that increased the fees for people who are caught not registering their pets.
Rayala says it's a public health issue as well as a matter of taking care of your pets. "We want to encourage people to take them to the vet, get their annual checkups, get their rabies shots, make sure they're healthy. And that's one of the things licensing does encourage."
Residents in Weston and Wausau can go online to http://PetData.com to register their pets, as well as going to city hall or the municipal center to get registered.
