WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- Supporters, families and veterans packed Central Wisconsin Airport to welcome home the latest Honor Flight.
A group of 83 veterans and their chaperones made the trip to Washington DC on Monday. Waiting for them to return was several hundred people packing into the CWA concourse, along with family and friends. Kay Doran from Antigo was waiting for her husband Roger who served in the Air Force during Korea. "I think the Korean and Vietnam vets that are being included in this now didn't have that feeling, that the World War II vets when they came home to parades and ticker tape. It was a different feeling."
Lac du Flambeau American Legion post commander John Brown says this is a second chance for the country to do the right thing for a lot of these veterans. "We were treated badly by our own country, our own people. But now, the last twenty years, it's changed. Now the Vietnam veterans and Korea are getting more recognition that they deserved 50 years ago." The Lac du Flambeau tribe sent along the Tomahawk Circle drummers in order to honor one of their own vets who was on the flight.
Brown says this is an honor that all veterans should take advantage of. "No matter what branch of service, where you come from, where you grew up, as long as you served this proud country you're allowed to go, to visit that memorial that was made for you."
