STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) -- The West Nile virus has been found in Portage County.

Portage County Health Officer Gary Garske says the virus was found in a dead crow while conducting their annual testing of dead birds. The department normally tests crows, blue jays, and ravens in the spring for the virus.

Now that the virus has been detected, the county health department will not accept dead birds for testing until next year. Garske says people should still report sick and dead birds to a toll-free state hotline.  That number is 800-433-1610.
