STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) -- A reckless homicide trial against a Bancroft man is nearly over.
Reymundo Perez is accused of reckless homicide for allegedly causing the injuries that killed 2-year-old Felix Espinoza-Villa at a Bancroft home on October 28th of 2011.
During closing arguments, defense attorney Gary Schmaus argued that the child’s fatal injuries were caused by his mother Beatrice, who was charged with child abuse and received minor punishment. Prosecutor Veronica Isherwood rebutted by saying Schmaus’ argument is smoke and mirrors, and that the doctors testifying clearly outlined the injuries Felix had and when they would have occurred, which was when he was being cared for by Perez.
The Portage County jury of 6 men and 6 women began deliberating just before 2:00 p.m. Thursday.
