RHINELANDER, Wis. (WSAU) -- A standoff involving law enforcement and an armed and intoxicated Rhinelander man lasted over six hours Tuesday night.
The incident was at 640 Pelican Street, and lasted for over six hours. Oneida County's Special Response Unit was trying to talk 50-year-old Matthew Carlson out of the residence from the afternoon hours until well after dark. Carlson was intoxicated, armed with a 9-millimeter handgun, and suicidal. The team asked him to exit the home numerous times.
At dark, the SWAT team positioned their vehicle. Over an intercom, the team again asked Carlson to come out peacefully. Carlson was taken into custody after the Special Response Unit deployed chemical agents into the house, and he came out.
Carlson was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital for detoxification and evaluation. Charges are pending.
