KNOWLTON, Wis. (WSAU) -- State officials have approved a $13 million dollar expansion of a coal ash pit in Knowlton.
That landfill is used to store and dispose of coal ash from Wisconsin Public Service power plants in Weston and Green Bay. The waste product used to be sold off as a filler for concrete, but changes in its regulation have disallowed that use in the future.
Wisconsin Public Service asked for the expansion back in December, and got approval this week. The move would expand the 35 acre site by another 22 acres, and has the permission for another 7 planned expansion sites in the future.
