MERRILL, Wis. (WSAU) -- The box full of abandoned kittens found along a Lincoln county road are going to be OK. Lincoln County Humane Society Director Liz Friedenfels says the eight males and seven females are getting plenty of attention from shelter staff.
Friedenfels says they were concerned about the health of the kittens after being in a box with the flaps shut, in hot outdoor conditions, with no food or water. “Initially, we were very concerned about heat stroke and the severity of the upper respiratory symptoms that they were showing, but we had our vet in yesterday (Tuesday) to check them. Everyone has been cleared. We’re going to have to continue them on antibiotics for a while, but they’re definitely all going to make it.”
A passerby found the box and contacted the shelter. Now, Friedenfels says the challenge is finding forever homes for the 15 kittens and several other animals they have. “We have had a lot of people stop, but only two applications turned in so far, so hopefully we’re going to get a lot more very soon.”
The kittens are not all from the same litter. Friedenfels says the sizes of the kittens proved that. “It’s actually quite a range. The youngest are probably around three months, and the oldest closer to six months, so they are definitely not all from one litter.”
Since news about the abandoned kittens was released, Friedenfels says they have received a few generous donations to help care for them. “We’ve had people that have dropped off a few bags of kitten chow and things like that, and you know those supplies really go a long way, because, especially where the kittens are going to need immediate medical care. All of the support we can get makes a difference, and we’re just very lucky to have that.”
