Formal charges filed against Manawa man in Plover police shooting

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) -- Formal charges are now filed against a Manawa man accused of threatening a Plover police officer with a knife.

33-year-old Brett Lieberman appeared by video today at his initial appearance in Portage County court. He faces a charge of attempted first degree intentional homicide for allegedly charging at a cop with a knife before being shot by the officer.

Police say Officer Andy Hopfensperger attempted to stop Lieberman on Highway 54 between Locust Drive and Maple Drive for erratic driving on August 8th. Lieberman jumped out of his pickup truck and went after officer Andy Hopfensperger with a knife. That’s when Hopfensperger shot him with his service weapon.

Lieberman had been hospitalized for treatment of the gunshot wound, but authorities are not disclosing which hospital or when he was released to police custody.

Lieberman's attorney waived time limits on just when a preliminary hearing in the case. Lieberman remains in jail on a $100,000 cash bond.
