RIB FALLS, Wis (WSAU) Highway 29 was closed for nearly five hours after a fatal crash Monday night. It happened around 9:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes near Edgar.

Marathon County Sheriff’s Department deputies say an ATV and two cars were involved in the crash. The ATV driver died at the scene. His name will be released after 8:00 a.m. Wednesday.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the deceased adult male, who is a resident of Marathon County, was northbound on Cardinal Lane operating an ATV. He continued northbound across State Highway 29 with the intent of continuing northbound on 9th Ave. in the Township of Rib Falls. He then collided with two westbound passenger vehicles.

One of the involved passenger vehicle drivers was transported by an Edgar Fire Department ambulance to Aspirus Wausau Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Traffic was detoured for several hours while crash reconstruction teams evaluated the scene. State Highway 29 was reopened for normal vehicle traffic at 2:22 a.m.

Personnel from the Marathon County Sheriff's Office, Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Village of Edgar Fire Department managed the crash scene. The Marathon County Highway Department assisted with re-routing traffic away from Highway 29 until the investigation was completed.
