STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) -- Portage County residents will have a chance to talk groundwater problems with county officials over the next several months.

Portage County Executive Patty Dreier will be hosting listening sessions across the county starting September 30th. Drier says in a statement that she's hoping to help build a common understanding on groundwater issues by talking things out with the public. Each session will start off with an explanation and education session on groundwater and will be followed up by discussion on concerns based on each municipality the sessions are being held in.

One of the major issues in central Portage County is a dispute over a new city well for Stevens Point which residents in the Hull say is draining their home wells dry. Officials will also be offering free nitrate testing for residents who bring in a pint of tap water to the sessions.

All the information collected will be gathered up and used to help the executive's office revise and rewrite the county's Groundwater Management Plan.
