School voucher program likely to expand

MADISON, Wis (WRN-WSAU)  Look for expansion of the statewide school voucher system from Republicans in the Wisconsin legislature. State Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald says he could see enrollment in Wisconsin's statewide private school voucher program growing dramatically.

Current enrollment in the statewide program is capped at one thousand students - but Governor Scott Walker and Republicans in the Legislature want more. Fitzgerald suggests the program could grow to include up to 9,000 students. Governor Walker favors expansion, but hasn't suggested an exact number.

Fitzgerald says he doesn't know yet if that means lifting the enrollment cap entirely, or just increasing the number of students given vouchers.

In the last legislative session the program was expanded beyond the Milwaukee area.
