RHINELANDER, Wis. (WXPR) -- A St. Paul man is being held in Oneida county on a high cash bond, charged with armed robbery as a repeat offender. 43-year-old Byron Kendall Lewis was arrested about 10:00 p.m. Sunday evening in Minocqua.

The Krist Oil convenience store in Woodruff was robbed about two hours earlier by a man who allegedly showed the clerk a handgun. A tip led police to arrest Lewis at Trig's 70 West Center in Minocqua.

At an initial hearing in Rhinelander, Judge Patrick O'Melia asked Lewis about his past.  "Are you currently on parole or probation? (Lewis) 'yes'....with Hudson-St. Croix..' (O'Melia) 'O.K., is that from the 2007 conviction?'...(Lewis)...'yes'."

Assistant District Attorney Steven Michlig asked for a high cash bond.  "In spite of the fact he is on extended supervision, based on his criminal history and the nature of the current offense, the state would ask for significant cash bail. I think somewhere in the range of $50,000 would be appropriate."

Judge O'Melia approved the $50,000 cash bond request. He asked Lewis to find an attorney for his next court appearance in Oneida county on December 1. Since he was on extended supervision from a prior robbery conviction, he could be revoked by the state and returned to prison from Oneida county.
