RHINELANDER, WI (WSAU) -  A Rhinelander man is going to prison for illegally possessing a firearm. 29-year-old Christopher Whittaker is a convicted felon, and was not supposed to have the weapon, due to past convictions for vehicle hijacking and child abuse.

He was sentenced Friday by U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman to three years in federal prison followed by three more years on extended supervision.

Whittaker pleaded guilty to this crime on February 13, 2013, and has remained in custody since his guilty plea. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Oneida County Sheriff’s Department did the investigation. Whittaker was caught with a Ruger .22 caliber rifle October 3rd of last year.
