Many schools closed Monday in advance of near-record cold weather

UNDATED (WSAU)  Many area school distrcits are announcing on Friday that they won't be open Monday because of the extreme cold. 

Wausau area public and private schools, the D.C. Everest School District, Stevens Point, Antigo, Mosinee, and Wittenberg-Birnamwood have already announced that they'll be closed on Monday. Many other schools in the region are expected to follow.

North Central Technical College has cancelled classes on all campuses for Monday.

Temperatures are expected to be below zero during the day on Sunday, with cold weather staying into the area for Monday and Tuesday. Wind chills could be -40 to -60 during that period.

In Minnesota, Governor Mark Dayton ordered all schools in the state closed on Monday. Governor Walker is monitoring the situation, and is said to be considering a similar order for Wisconsin schools.
