MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU) -- “Smart meters” will be the topic of a public information meeting Tuesday night in Marshfield, and organizer Dorothy Schnitzler says the new technology used in the smart meters present health and privacy concerns, such as having your use of electricity or water controlled.

According to Schnitzler, “They can regulate this right from their office with whatever switch, I don’t know how, but they can turn it on and turn it off.” She went on to use the example of turning air conditioners on and off every 25 minutes during peak usage periods in the summer. Schnitzler thinks most people are unaware when it comes to information about smart meters, and after the presentation will hand out pamphlets and DVD on the topic. Last week, a Marshfield utility spokesman announced that residents will probably not be able to “opt-out” from the new smart meters. That meeting is scheduled for 7 pm Tuesday night at the Eagles Club on North Oak Avenue in Marshfield.
