STEVENS POINT, Wis (WSAU) -- Kids are getting more and more digitally connected at younger ages, but many really don't know some of the hazards of an online life.

A presentation next week will help parents teach their kids about what is or isn't okay to share online. Associate Professor Kym Buchanan says parents need to help their kid's learn about oversharing. "We need to help children and young people appreciate that the choices they make now could be used to judge them years later. From a university considering admitting them as a student, or an employer looking to offer them a job."

Buchanan says many kids don't appreciate the fact that the things you say can last a long time. "If you pass a note in class, and you said something mean about somebody else, there's a limited number of eyeballs that are going to see that, and eventually that note's going to end up in a recycle bin. But if you post it on the Internet, it could be there forever."

Pediatrician Megan Moreno, author of “Sex, Drugs ‘n Facebook: A Parent’s Toolkit for Healthy Internet Use,” will speak at Sentry’s Theater@1800 January 28 from 7 to 8:30 pm.
