WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- The man driving when his car broke through the ice, killing his passenger, is going to prison. 32-year-old William Bowden of Stratford was driving drunk two years ago when the car plunged into the Big Eau Pleine Reservoir near the Highway S bridge. 34-year-old Timothy Spindler drowned in the incident.

Bowden was found guilty of his 4th OWI in January, and several other charges including homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle were dismissed in a plea deal. Judge Greg Grau sentenced Bowden Friday to three years in state prison, followed by three more years of extended supervision when he gets out.

When released, any vehicles Bowden has will need ignition interlock devices to prevent them from starting if the driver is intoxicated.
