Pay study concerns Stevens Point teachers

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) -- Several Stevens Point school district teachers are concerned about implementation of a new employee pay plan.

The Stevens Point Area Schools are in the process of assessing teacher pay, with a study similar to how cities and counties have approached the issue.

Teachers spoke to the school board Monday night about their concerns with the plan, which breaks pay grades down to initial educator, accomplished professional educator, and certified master educator with different requirements and pay.

The Stevens Point Area Education Association union has been unable to reach agreement with the district since Act 10 passed in 2011. Because of that, several experienced teachers have left the district for better pay elsewhere.

School Board President Angel Faxon says the Carlson Dettman Consulting plan is a work in progress, and is far from final.

Consultant Charlie Carlson is recommending the district implement a pay plan for the support staff, as well.
