WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- There’s still time for emergency response organizations to apply for grants from Wisconsin Public Service.

Spokesperson Kelly Zagrzebski says the program is called, “Safety-It’s Worth The Energy” and offers grants up to $2,000 to qualifying applicants.

Zagrzebski says so far, the applications turned in have some very worthwhile projects.  “We have gotten a lot of really good applications for that opportunity from throughout northeastern Wisconsin.”

She says several applications have come in, but there’s still time to send more.  “They have until August 1st to submit their applications, and then we’ve got some criteria, and we’ve got an outside panel that will actually be reviewing the applications as it fits, and see how it fits to the criteria.”

She would like to see more applications come in from central Wisconsin.  “There are a number of first responder groups just within central Wisconsin that i cover that have talked with me about submitting their applications, so I’m expecting pretty close to maybe 30 or 35 that we will receive.”

Zagrzebski says several groups and projects qualify for the grant program for training and equipment, to K9 programs, and more.  “It’s all of the above, whether it’s law enforcement, volunteer or paid fire departments or EMT’s. We also have some of our emergency management organizations and emergency governments have submitted requests, as well as the regional emergency management system.”

The deadline to apply for the grants is August 1st. WPS has more information at their website, here.
