Marathon Park Splash Pad open for season

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- Marathon Park's Splash Pad at Marathon Junction is now officially open for the season.

It's one of the big draws to the park over the summer, and parks employee Jamie Anderson says they've already seen some big crowds. "With the mild weather, it's definitely brought a lot of people, and today Lincoln Elementary brought some of their students here for a day at the Splash Pad and on the train and a lot of ice cream too."

The park's train was refurbished and repainted a few years back to model the old Milwaukee Road Hiawatha that used to run from Milwaukee to Minneapolis. "It's been in Wausau for 60 years, at least the train has, and it's just a big part of the city. There's lots to do for all ages, there's the playground, they just have fun."

Anderson says the Splash Pad's a great place for kids to cool off in the summer if you're not looking for a full day at the pool. "There are some machines that just shoot water for children, but it's 50 cents to get in for the full day, so it's a pretty good deal even though there's no full pool."

The park is open every day through the summer and the Splash Pad runs from noon to 7 each day. Kids must be 10 or under to play in the pad.
