WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- A Wausau woman is facing animal neglect charges after her landlord found two Chihuahuas locked in a small kennel. The dogs named Pepe and Lopez were underweight, and in poor health.
Wausau police say the dogs were in urine soaked bedding, and had feces in their otherwise empty food and water bowls.
19-year-old Nicole M. Miller wasn’t supposed to have dogs in the rented duplex. She told police a friend was occasionally coming to help take care of the dogs.
Miller has been charged with two counts of intentionally failing to provide food for an animal, keeping animals in an improper shelter space, and sanitation violations for an animal shelter. She will be back in court July 28th for a pretrial conference. A plea hearing has been scheduled for September 3rd before Judge Greg Grau. She is currently free on a $750 dollar signature bond.
Pepe and Lopez were taken to the Marathon County Humane Society by a neighbor, where they were seen by a veterinarian. Both dogs are now healthy and have new homes.
