Wausau schools proposal to set up safe neighborhoods heads to committee this week

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- A proposed plan to keep Wausau school neighborhoods safe is headed to committee this week.

The plan would be a partnership between the Wausau School District and Wausau police and aims to help keep the neighborhoods around elementary schools safe and free from crime. The program would be similar to Neighborhood Watch or Safe Passages and would involve citizen volunteers stepping up to help monitor their local areas.

Many children are outdoors alone without adults, and could be exposed to criminal activity or get hurt because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. District officials are asking for a partnership with the police and fire departments to help guide and mentor the local groups.

The project could come at a cost though as the police department is already looking to cut 1 percent of its overall budget this year.

The first project proposal starts tomorrow morning at the Wausau Police and Fire Commission meeting.
