RHINELANDER, Wis. (WSAU) -- Wisconsin’s Lieutenant Governor was in the northwoods Monday as part of the state’s effort to expand broadband service.

Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch joined the state’s Public Service Commission Broadband Director Dr. Tithi Chattopadhay in Rhinelander to present a quarter of a million dollars to three businesses that will construct additional facilities for high speed internet. The money will be used for adding nine miles of fiber optic cable and three wireless towers. State officials say this will add high speed service to around 1,200 businesses and homes.

The dollars were awarded as matching grants to ChoiceTEL, CenturyLink, and SonicNet. Kleefisch says the expansion of high speed internet is important to public safety, education, and economic development in northern Wisconsin.
