STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) -- The investigation into a Portage County inmate’s suicide earlier this summer is over.

Convicted murderer Jose Luis Flores Aca hung himself in a Portage County Jail cell July 6th at around 11:30 p.m. He had managed to make a noose from strips of bed sheets, and hooked them over a wood screw that was not supposed to be in the cell.

Since it happened in the jail operated by the Sheriff’s Department, the City of Stevens Point Police Department was called in to do the death investigation. A separate Department of Corrections investigation was also done. The ruling by investigators is that jail staff did nothing wrong and did not violate any protocols while overseeing Flores Aca and the other prisoners.

Jose Luis Flores Aca had already pleaded guilty to sexual assault and murder of his neighbor, 36-year-old Jamie Koch at a Plover apartment building on August 7th of 2013. He then tried to burn Koch’s body in her car in a remote area of Waupaca County.

Flores Aca was to be sentenced at the end of September for up to 40 years, but took his own life first.
