MEDFORD, Wis. (WSAU) -- A missing person report quickly turned into a death investigation for Taylor County deputies Saturday. A man called officers at 1:50 a.m. when they couldn’t locate his 52-year-old friend, who was supposed to meet him. Medford police assisted deputies, and located a box-type hunting stand near the missing man’s all terrain vehicle. The hunting stand had recently burned, and what is believed to be human remains were located inside.

The man’s name has not been released yet. Investigators say the man had a habit of napping in his stand, and heating it with a propane “sunflower” type heater.

No foul play is suspected. His identity will be confirmed, and released after family has been notified.

Sheriff Bruce Daniels is urging hunters to use safe hunting and outdoor activity practices, including the use of weapons and space heaters.
