MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- A hot button issue for Democrats during the last few years is getting attention from Republicans. The majority Republicans are moving quickly to assemble a bill that would make both public and private schools more accountable, including schools that receive state vouchers under the school choice program.
Similar legislation failed last year when lawmakers couldn’t agree on the testing and sanctions that would be used.
Governor Scott Walker has said he wants to see this bill on his desk, and Assembly Speaker Robin Vos has said it will be one of the first items addressed in the new Legislative session.
An early draft of the bill would allow multiple testing options, and would create a council to determine any sanctions or rewards schools might receive.
