STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) --

The Stevens Point School District is about to save over a million dollars by changing the structure of their insurance plan.

The School Board is working with Security Health Plan to create a new three-year plan that puts more focus on employee health and wellness initiatives. This includes a biometric screening and a health assessment.

Over 96% of staff participated in these screenings and assessments this spring, which lowered premiums for the whole district. The school was anticipating a premium increase of $1.4 million dollars. These changes lowered the expected increase to just over $312,000, even with mandatory increases for the Affordable Care Act.

After this year, premiums will be determined by employee participation in screening, assessments, wellness activities, and claim experience.
